Make Terrebonne Parish a Safe, Humane Community

In 2021, 12,401 dogs and cats were killed in animal shelters across Louisiana. Many of those pets were healthy or treatable pets that could have been placed in homes or community cats that could have been trapped, neutered, and released. We know our state can do better.

That’s why as residents of Terrebonne Parish, LA, USA, we want our parish to make a formal resolution committed to lifesaving.

The shelters in our parish should focus on saving as many lives as possible through pet adoption, spay/neuter, trap-neuter-return and other community support programs rather than achieving a specific numerical outcome.

Why is this important?

In 2021, the Louisiana state legislature passed two humane initiative resolutions [SR 125 and HR 120]. Resolutions are an important way for local government to declare a stance on a particular issue. Through a humane animal resolution, elected officials make a clear statement that they want their community to work towards ending killing in shelters. This helps draw a line in the sand to drive toward the goal of saving the lives of dogs and cats.

Now it is time for local parishes to commit their support for pet lifesaving by passing a humane resolution.
